Creative is the targeting

There was a time when media buying was the job. You picked interests, stacked lookalikes, split everything into neat ad sets, and the person who knew the settings panel best won.

That era is over. Since ATTApple’s App Tracking Transparency shipped with iOS 14.5 in April 2021 — apps must ask permission before tracking users across other apps and sites. Apple’s overview →, the platforms see less, so they lean on the one signal you still fully control: the creative itself. The hook decides who stops scrolling. The first two seconds decide who the algorithm goes looking for next.

callout

If your hook doesn’t select the audience, the algorithm will select one for you — and it will be the cheapest audience, not the best one.

In practice this flips the org chart of a campaign. The targeting tab takes five minutes. The creative pipeline takes the week. Which is roughly the opposite of where the credit goes.

So the honest job description of a performance marketer in 2026 is closer to a creative director with a spreadsheet. Volume of concepts, speed of iteration, and a pipeline that can turn one insight into twenty variations before lunch — that is the moat.

The best media buyers I know spend their time in the editor, not the ads manager.

Placeholder ending — swap this draft for the real essay when it’s written. The structure above (callout, figure, divider, pull quote) is the reusable kit.
